BETA

Beta was a female bottlenose dolphin native to Mexico, where she was captured in 1986 at Campeche Bay. A few months later, Beta arrived in Italy, at the Rimini Dolphinarium, in the company of another female named Alfa , belonging to the same capture group. Beta's life began, as well as with Alfa, also with two other dolphins already residing in the dolphinarium such as Speedy and Chico .

On June 26, 1997, Beta successfully gave birth to her first (and only) calf: a female, later named Blue. Unlike the Dolphinarium of Riccione, which took care of transferring the pregnant females to the small nursery of Cattolica, Beta gave birth in the dolphinarium, consisting of a circular tank.

In 2001, Beta was the protagonist of a bad accident (we don't know what or who occured in the accident), which caused an injury to the rostrum. In order to receive better care, she was transferred to the Aquarium of Genoa. A few months later, her little daughter Blue joined her too. In their company there were other dolphins such as Bonnie, her daughter, Cleo , Golia and Silver .

At the inauguration of the new Oltremare Park in Riccione in 2004, several dolphins residing between the dolphinariums of Riccione and Cattolica and at the Aquarium of Genoa were chosen to be transferred to the new structure. This was not the case with Beta. When her daughter Blue was moved to the new park in 2005, Beta was temporarily alone until the arrival, in 2006, of another adult female named Linda and her son, Mateo, from Boudewijn Seapark, Belgium.

On 12 October 2008, in the night between Saturday and Sunday, Beta suddenly died. According to the results of the autopsy, the death of the dolphin of about twenty-five years would be attributable to a cardiovascular collapse.
