Veera was a female bottlenose dolphin, possibly born in 1978, captured on August 24, 1984 in Florida, United States. After about less than a year, on March 31, 1985, Veera was transferred to a Finnish facility, the Särkänniemi dolphinarium, in the city of Tampere, together with two other dolphins such as Näsi (captured that same year) and Delphi (captured in 1984, three days before Veera).
Veera became pregnant for the first time at the age of about twelve, and on 9 September 1996 her first puppy, Eevertti, was born, with her inseparable companion, Delphi, the only adult male residing in the structure: three years earlier, in fact , Delphi's first child, Leevi, was born, conceived with the other female of the group, Näsi.
The year 2014 marked the beginning of the decline in Finnish dolphinarium activity. On August 30 of that year, the vets decided to euthanize the 35-year-old Näsi, after the chronic illness she had been suffering from since 2008 and from which she was on antibiotics and incessant treatment had worsened considerably in July. Remaining the only female in the group of dolphins, Veera gave birth again on 8 October 2014. The cub, a female, lived only a week, dying on 17 October from causes unknown to us today, after the excellent health conditions recorded at birth. . The father of the second and last daughter of Veera was, this time, another dolphin named Leevi.
Two years later, in August 2016, the Finnish dolphinarium Särkänniemi declared the end of its dolphin shows and the closing of the dolphinarium itself. Veera, together with comrade Delphi, their son Eevertti and Leevi, were transferred in total security and secrecy to a European facility. At the first light of dawn on August 28, 2016, the four dolphins arrived at Attica Zoological Park, in Greece, where four other dolphins such as Lima, Nojus, Ekinox and Naska were welcoming them. A few months later on arriving in Greece, Veera's companion, Delphi, died suddenly at the age of thirty-nine in January 2017. The only female in a group of males, it was deemed necessary to find permanent accommodation for Veera, after the transfer to Greece turned out to be "temporary".
Thus it was that Veera arrived at the Oltremare park in Riccione on 18 July 2020. The announcement of the arrival of the dolphin in Italy was first made known by the Greek structure on 28 July, through publication in local newspapers. Oltremare, on the other hand, announced the arrival of Veera on 2 August presenting her during one of the daily shows.
Veera had a very docile, peaceful and quiet character. Her integration into the group of Oltremare females seems to have been better than what was actually expected. With special attention from Mia and Cleo, Veera has always been under the watchful eye of Pele and Candy, the two older females.
Unfortunately, Veera died suddenly on June 1, 2021 due to cardiac arrest. The dolphin was 43 years old.
