ULiSSE
Ulisse is a male bottlenose dolphin, born in a small nursery adjacent to what was once a small dolphinarium in the city of Cattolica, the Aquatic World. His parents, Candy and Bravo, are both natives of the Gulf of Mexico, United States. Ulisse's childhood was concentrated between the dolphinaria of Cattolica and Riccione, together with his parents and brothers Tabo, Golia and Silver. The last brother of Ulisse, Achille, was born on 23 August 2002 at the Aquarium of Genoa.
In 2003, the small dolphinarium of Riccione closed definitively, after the enactment of new laws regarding the maintenance of dolphins in a controlled environment in the national territory. The following year, the new Oltremare park was inaugurated and soon Ulisse and the other dolphins were transferred to the new structure. In the new park, Ulisse became a real mascot, through the nickname of "Curious Dolphin", also flowing into all national television networks. However, starting from November 2009, Ulisse and his three brothers (Tabo, Achille and Golia) were transferred to the Fasano Dolphinarium for the summer season, only to return to Oltremare in the winter season. But in March 2014, when Oltremare was acquired by the new Costa Edutainment management, the four dolphins returned to Riccione and the dolphinarium in southern Italy was definitively closed.
In November 2015, through a particular involvement of the Oltremare park in the European project for endangered species, known by the abbreviation of EPP, Ulisse was chosen as the ideal candidate for a new transfer. Together with his younger brother, Achille, he was transferred to Loro Parque in Tenerife, in order to foster continuity and genetic diversity in the Spanish park, which at the same time transferred a young male, Joan, to Oltremare.
Ulisse integrated very well into his new family: thanks to the presence of his brother Achille, initially more shy, they were both able to bond with all the members of the group, especially the older females.
How to recognize Ulisse
1. Ulisse's size is less robust than his older brother, Tabo.
2. The rostrum is short in shape.
3. The dorsal fin, sickle-shaped, has a single notch almost towards the tip.
Ulisse was really a very curious dolphin when he was a baby, probably the reason that made him acquire such a well-known fame. With the arrival of adulthood, the character of Ulisse changed but without neglecting his curious side which, at times, really surprised the people of the audience. Ulisse is a very sociable dolphin and had created a special bond with all of his brothers.
