TEIDE
Teide was a male bottlenose dolphin, born on September 28, 1997 at Aqualand Costa Adeje on the island of Tenerife, archipelago of the Canary Islands (Spain). His parents are Squeak and Héctor: the mother was captured in Florida in 1972, while the father met the man in 1995, in Cuba.
The following year, in 1999, Teide and his parents were transferred to Italy, to a new dolphinarium built inside an amusement park in Castelnuovo del Garda, called Palablù. A dolphin named Amanda, belonging to the same capture group as Héctor, was also transferred with them: when they arrived, there were already other dolphins in the dolphinarium such as Romeo, Juliet, Violetta, Betty and Robin. On June 12 of that same year, Teide's parents died of a bad infection: Amanda would have died the next years, on August 2000. When the last "historic" dolphin of the facility, Violetta, died of a spinal injury, Teide grew up together with Betty, Robin and their offprings Naù (born October 28, 2001), Tango (born March 31 2005, but died in October 2008) and Mia (born on December 28, 2008).
In 2013, the Gardaland amusement park passed under new management, Merlin SPA, which still holds a significant record in the management of both British and Italian theme parks. However, the new management declared itself against keeping the cetaceans in a controlled environment, promising the closing of the dolphinarium in a short time. A year before the arrival of the new management, in April 2012, Teide was transferred to the Aquarium of Genoa where an adult female named Linda was waiting for him, resident in the aquarium since 2006 but who then returned to the Boudewijn SeaPark, in Belgium, in 2014.
By 2013, all the Palablù dolphins had arrived in Genoa and were transferred to the new Cetacean Pavilion, where on September 1st, 2014 Teide's first daughter, Goccia, was born, sired with her inseparable companion Naù.
In September 2013, the old tanks of the Genoa Aquarium welcomed four dolphins from the Rimini Dolphinarium: it was an adult female named Alfa and her three offsprings, Sole, Luna and Lapo. Teide's integration with the two females turned out to be complete, but with the arrival of the two brothers, Teide found himself in difficulty.
In November 2018, the then dominant male Robin was transferred to the ZooMarine of Torvaianica, near Rome, and the competition between Teide and Sole turned out to be more marked, so much so that Teide visibly showed on his body his clashes with Sole , perfectly normal when it comes to two males competing for a harem of sexually mature females.
Nevertheless, to everyone's disbelief, on May 28, 2020 Teide was found lifeless in the medical tank (dolphins have access to all tanks) and the causes of death, unfortunately, have not yet been published. The day of Teide's death would have been the first day of reopening of the Genoa Aquarium following the three-month forced lockdown to counter the spread of the new Sars-Cov2 virus.
