TABO

CSC_3146.JPG

Tabo is a male bottlenose dolphin, born on June 15, 1993 in a small nursery adjacent to what was once a small dolphinarium in Cattolica, the Aquatic World. His parents are Candy and Bravo, both natives of the Gulf of Mexico, United States. Tabo's childhood was concentrated between the dolphinaria of Cattolica and Riccione, in the company of his parents and siblings.

Tabo was the first, first generation dolphin to be successfully born in Italy: in the same year, on July 6, his half-brother Golia was born. Four years later, his brother Ulisse was born on September 5th, and half-brother Silver, on June 17th. Tabo's last brother, Achille, was born on 23 August 2002 at the Genoa Aquarium.

A year later, in 2003, the small dolphinarium of Riccione closed definitively, following the enactment of new laws that provided for different criteria regarding the quality standards on the maintenance of dolphins in a controlled environment. The construction of the new Oltremare Park, on the hills of Riccione, and its subsequent inauguration in 2004, allowed the transfer of Tabo and the rest of the dolphins to the new structure. From November 2009 until March 2014, Tabo and his three brothers (Golia, Ulisse and Achille) were transferred to the Fasano Dolphinarium for the summer reopening season, through a collaboration between ZooSafari and Narvalo Srl, the first company to manage the Oltremare park. When, in March 2014, Oltremare was acquired by the Costa Edutaintment company, Tabo returned to Riccione along with his brothers.

He lived in Oltremare until March 2020 when, through a particular involvement of the park in the European program for endangered species, known with the abbreviation of EEP , and the collaboration with the EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquariums), Tabo was chosen as the ideal candidate for moving to a facility in Europe: the ZooMarine of Algarve, Portugal. Two other dolphins were transferred with him: a young male named Joan (who arrived in Oltremare in 2015 from Loro Parque in Tenerife, Spain) and a young calf named Taras (born at the Oltremare Park on 9 August 2014).

How to recognize Tabo

1. Tabo is a dolphin with an impressive size, very similar to that of his father, Bravo.

2. The rostrum is particularly elongated, with some spots on the top.

3. Some gray streaks particularly surround the eye contour.

4. The dorsal fin, in a cropped but high shape, has two notches in the lower part, towards the back.

Tabo is a playful but peaceful dolphin. He loves the company of trainers and sometimes people. With the members of the group of dolphins, he was always very quiet and aware when there were small conflicts. In the last few years prior to moving to Portugal, Tabo was always in the company of the dominant male, Micha, his brother, Golia, and a male named Joan, the latter for a short period of time.
