Sole

Sole is a male bottlenose dolphin born on May 3, 1993 at the Rimini Dolphinarium. His parents are Alfa and Speedy. Sole spent most of his childhood in the small dolphinarium with his mother, the sister Luna, his younger brothers Rocco (who died in 2009) and Lapo, and two other dolphins such as Beta and Blue, who's his half-sister, with which seemed to have a close relationship. When his father Speedy was transferred to the Aquarium of Genoa to follow a treatment therapy to counter a serious infection, which ended up killing him a couple of days later, Sole was the only adult male in the dolphinarium. The trainers had to take steps in attempting to keep Sole separate from her mother Alfa, to prevent her from becoming pregnant in an attempt to mate.

At the end of September 2013 the Italian State Forestry Corps imposed the seizure of Sole, his brother and sister, and his mother as the Rimini Dolphinarium had been denounced for the crime of animal abuse and lack of quality standards that respected the European and national zoological regulations. The new home of Sole and his family became the Aquarium of Genoa. While mother Alfa and younger sister Luna had been transferred to the old pool still visible to the public, Sole and Lapo went through a longer than expected rehabilitation process, as the trauma of the trip and the sudden transfer caused both high levels of stress that would have risked being the cause of impending immunosuppression.

Following the transfer of the dominant male, Robin, to the ZooMarine of Torvaianica in 2016, Sole fought for the position of leader with another adult dolphin named Teide, of a much more calm and peaceful character than Sole. With the sudden death of Teide on May 28, 2020, Sole acquired the position of dominant male, as well as being the only adult male residing at the Aquarium of Genoa.

How to recognize Sole

- Sole is a very robust dolphin and has a dark skin color, inherited from his father Speedy.

- Its sickle-shaped dorsal fin, shorter than that of Luna, has a notch in the middle.

Sole has always been known as a dolphin with a lively and cuddly character, who does not disdain the company of trainers and curious visitors at all. Since his stay in Rimini and then also in Genoa, Sole has always had a very close relationship with his younger brother, Lapo.
