JOAN

CSC_0532.JPG

Joan is a male bottlenose dolphin, born on July 2nd, 2005 at Loro Parque in Tenerife, Spain. His parents are Clara and Paco: his mother was born in Loro Parque on December 19, 1999, while his father is a native of Florida, where he was captured in February 1984.

The first year of Joan's life was somewhat turbulent: for his mother Clara, at the first experience of motherhood, it was difficult to deal with it. Thanks to the intervention of the trainers, giving him a very nutritious preparation of milk and minced fish, and the company of the other adult females, Joan grew strong and healthy, and then integrated with his mother and father.

On November 4, 2015, through a decision to maintain genetic diversity in their group of dolphins, the Loro Parque of Tenerife decided to transfer Joan to an Italian facility, at the same time willing to transfer two of its dolphins for the same reason. The Oltremare Park of Riccione thus welcomed Joan, while two young males named Achille and Ulisse found a new home in the Spanish park.

Joan met mainly three adult males named Micha, Tabo and Golia, while integration with females took a back seat for the time being. Nevertheless, Joan participated in the daily performances to the public in total safety and trust with the new trainers.

At the beginning of 2020, Joan was again chosen for a new transfer, provided for by the European Program for Endangered Species, known as EEP, managed and authorized by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums, known as EAZA, always in favor of maintaining a long-term genetic diversity among dolphins captive population. In the company of Tabo and a young male named Taras (born in the Oltremare Park on 9 August 2014), Joan was transferred to the Zoomarine in Algarve, Portugal.

How to recognize Joan

1. Joan's body is very robust, similar to that of his father, Paco.

2. The skin color is slightly darker than the other dolphins.

3. The rostrum is short and barely pronounced, with a white spot on the tip.

4. The dorsal fin has a rounded tip.

Joan is a dolphin with a sociable and curious character, but also very determined and strong. There have never been direct confrontations with the other dolphins, but we know that in the last period adjacent to the move to Portugal, Joan preferred to spend his days in the company of Tabo. With people, Joan is a true "heartthrob" and has made a dent in the hearts of any trainer.

Despite his sometimes extroverted character, the integration with the new group of dolphins in Portugal was a real success.
