CANDY
Candy is a female bottlenose dolphin born perhaps in 1979 and then captured on May 21, 1982 in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. In the first part of her life, Candy always lived in Italy, between the Dolphinarium in Riccione and the Aquatic World in Cattolica, which later became a small nursery for pregnant dolphins and newborn babies. It was in that small structure that Candy became a mother three times. In 1991, at the age of eleven, Candy gave birth to Benny, who sadly died a few days after birth due to an infection with Cytomegal Virus , a virus that can also be transmitted to the fetus during the birth canal.
Tabo was born on June 15, 1993, while Ulisse was born on September 3, 1997. All his children were born from her union with a dolphin named Bravo. Between 2004 and 2005, Candy was permanently transferred to the Oltremare Park in Riccione together with other dolphins such as Pelè, Bravo, Tabo and Ulisse. During 2013, Candy suffered from a severe uterine infection with almost always bad results, but thanks to the constant care and commitment of all the staff she recovered and put on some weight.
How to recognize Candy
- The first detail that catches the eye are Candy's tiny eyes, of a different size from that of the other dolphins.
- Her dorsal fin, high and erect, is isosceles in shape with several notches.
- The caudal fin has an entirely serrated conformation.
Candy's character has been very mixed since she was transferred to Oltremare. In the period from 2004 to about 2013, Candy sometimes assumed a shy and dominant character towards the younger trainers and dolphins. In the following years, probably with the change in the management of the group of dolphins and with the advancing age, Candy seems to have taken on a curious, patient and very friendly personality. Sometimes, Candy gets very curious with people at the glass.
